This is Laci, Christy&#8217;s friend and the Social Media Director for the Christy Sims Foundation. Usually, Christy writes these blog posts herself but I&#8217;m filling in today because this week, I have a question for all of you. Before I ask it, though, let&#8217;s back up a little.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As you all know, Christy has been very busy over the past year and a half: A two month coma directly following her April 2013 attack, a dozen major reconstructive surgeries and serious physical therapy to follow that, fighting for a case to be brought against her ex, assembling\u00a0her foundation, and squeezing in media interviews every chance she gets\u00a0in order to\u00a0help raise awareness about domestic violence. Oh, and of course, raising two teenagers which I hear is a feat all on its own! In short, she does not slow down. I think we all appreciate that about her.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-169-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" poster=\"https:\/\/christysims.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Blog-Slideshow-2-SD-480p-m4v-image.jpg\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/christysims.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Blog-Slideshow-2-SD-480p.m4v?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/christysims.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Blog-Slideshow-2-SD-480p.m4v\">https:\/\/christysims.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Blog-Slideshow-2-SD-480p.m4v<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>As Christy continues to fight, recover, and speak publicly about domestic violence,\u00a0I think it is important that the people who know her share who she is to us. To strangers hearing\u00a0her story for the first time,\u00a0she might just be &#8220;the lady whose ex-boyfriend threw sulfuric acid on her&#8221; which is true&#8230;\u00a0that happened. However, as we all know, she&#8217;s so much more than that. And,\u00a0it&#8217;s really important that people understand that about domestic violence survivors &#8211; &#8220;They&#8221; are just like you and me because domestic violence can and does happen to people just like you and me.<\/p>\n<p>Christy is someone&#8217;s mother, someone&#8217;s daughter, someone&#8217;s\u00a0sister, someone&#8217;s aunt, someone&#8217;s inspiration, someone&#8217;s friend, someone&#8217;s colleague, someone&#8217;s\u00a0counselor, someone&#8217;s strength, someone&#8217;s classmate, someone&#8217;s mentor, etc. So, to my question:\u00a0Who is Christy to you?<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s tell the world Christy&#8217;s story but let&#8217;s make sure it&#8217;s the whole story because she is so much more than just the cowardly attack against her. I&#8217;ll even go first.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/christysims.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_7344.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-194 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/christysims.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_7344.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7344\" width=\"640\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/christysims.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_7344.jpg 640w, https:\/\/christysims.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_7344-266x300.jpg 266w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;Who Is Christy to Me?&#8221; by Laci Texter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Christy is a lot of things to me. She\u2019s my client, my mentor, and my friend just to name a few things. Christy is also\u00a0my reassurance that I am not just another dumb girl who was in an abusive relationship. The way I see it is Christy is a strong, intelligent, and wise woman so if she could end up on the receiving end of an acid attack, it\u2019s proof to me that anyone can if they aren\u2019t aware of the <a href=\"https:\/\/christysims.org\/blog\/2014\/05\/the-warning-signs-of-relationship-abuse\/\">signs of an abusive relationship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Witnessing how strong she has been since her attack has given me the strength to confront some of the demons that have haunted me since leaving my abusive ex-boyfriend seven years ago. That\u2019s right, I\u2019ve had <i>years<\/i> to process everything that happened to me and it\u2019s still difficult to do. I see Christy, who woke up from a two-month coma, taking everything on immediately.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that she does this flawlessly because she doesn\u2019t. If she did, I\u2019d know for sure she was faking her way through \u201crecovery\u201d. What\u2019s most powerful to me is her transparency in her recovery. She shares what she is dealing with on a daily basis and &#8211; <i>surprise!<\/i> &#8211; it\u2019s not always \u201cI\u2019m feeling strong and courageous!\u201d. Sometimes, it\u2019s \u201cI\u2019m having a bad day, <strong>period.<\/strong>\u201d It\u2019s refreshing because being a domestic violence survivor is exhausting if you\u2019re constantly putting on a brave face.<\/p>\n<p>So, yes, to me Christy is reassurance. She\u2019s reassurance that even smart women can find themselves in an abusive relationship but those same smart women can leave and they can turn that experience into something meaningful. She\u2019s reassurance that it\u2019s OK if I still have a bad day and don\u2019t want to put on the strong \u201csurvivor\u201d smile.
